Leyla M. Ruzhkova is the secondary antagonist of New Sakura Wars the Animation. A human-demon hybrid known as a Nadezhda, Leyla was tricked into joining Valery Kaminski's quest on destroying the world. To that end, they destroyed the Moscow Combat Revue and formed a new Revue made of imposters with Leyla being one of the members. She appears always by Valery Kaminsky's side, while attempting to be reunited with her younger sister Klara.
Appearance[]
Leyla is a gorgeous young woman of Russian descent with silver hair and blue eyes.
She wears a navy blue mini dress with several patterns. She also wears black gloves. Leyla wears a black pantyhose with a black belt around her left thigh. She is seen wearing black heels.
In her Nadezhda form, Leyla gains black angel-like wings. She also wears a black skimpy outfit that reveals most of her skin. She has a light blue crystal-like object covering her right eye along with red claws and red tattoo-like marks on her face, stomach and legs. She also gain sharp teeth and her eyes gain a diamond-like shape and a red glowing color.
In her first human appearance, Leyla was wearing a long black robe with a metal helmet just like Kaminski's mechanical dolls.
Personality[]
Leyla is shown as a beautiful stoic woman who has an undying loyalty to Valery Kaminski. Her devotion to him originates from her first meeting with him where he became the first person to call her beautiful and powerful despite her demonic nature. As a result, she follows Kaminski's orders and considers his ambitions absolute. While Leyla's desire is to please Kaminski, she starts to fear that his full devotion to reshape and conquer the world makes him more distant and unhinged which sprouts some doubts in the young woman.
It is revealed that Leyla always knew of Kaminski's true nature from the moment they first met. However, mostly because she wanted someone to accept her for what she is, Leyla pretended to never have known of Kaminski's intentions and did everything to please him and get his attention. She is shown to have some bitter feelings towards her own sister Klara solely for ''stealing'' Kaminski's heart and attention from her. Despite her own jealousy, Leyla stood for her Captain and let him control her as he pursued Klara to Tokyo and tried to capture her.
Leyla's main motivating factor is the love she has for her sister Klara. She fought opponents such as White Cape, Lancelot and Elise no matter how strong they are for the sole purpose of saving her sister. However, this love made her cold towards anyone who tried to get between her and Klara. This was shown when she ignored Hatsuho's words about leaving Klara alone to convince the young girl of coming back to her (even though Klara refused to because she didn't recognize her sister). Had Kaminski not told Leyla to stop, the young woman could have seriously injured Hatsuho. Her full pursuit of regaining her sister also makes her push Sakura from the top of a tower just for being in her way. Her love for her sister is so powerful that she overcame the brainwashing effect that Kaminski had on her and rescued her despite how badly wounded she was. After saving her, Leyla gladly told Klara to go back with the Flower Division instead of her showing how much Klara's safety and happiness were more important than her own desires.
Background[]
Leyla and her sister Klara were born in Moscow, Russia. Both sisters were part of a secret project which involved creating human and demon hybrids known as Nadezhda. Both girls were under the care of Natalia Ruzhkova, one of the main scientists involved in the project who hoped that the Nadezhda will lead towards a new age of coexistence between humans and demons. Natalia treated Leyla and Klara as her daughters and live a happy life together. However, Leyla secretly felt ashamed about her appearance and nature.
At some point, she met Valery Kaminski who joined the project as a volunteer. However, Kaminski, who secretly desired to rule the world, became the first person to call Leyla beautiful and powerful which led her to join him in his plans. While Leyla happily joined Kaminski, Natalia discovered the young man's true intentions and ran away with Klara to protect her.
Leyla assisted Kaminski in destroying the Moscow Combat Revue who were supposed to protect Klara due to Natalia's desire. Afterwards, Leyla joined Kaminski's New Moscow Combat Revue, which are composed of mechanical dolls created by Kaminski, to recapture Klara.
History[]
New Sakura Wars the Animation[]
Episode 1 : The Curtain Rises! The New Combat Revue[]
Leyla first appears in her demon form in Russia as she attacks a train at night to retreive her sister Klara only to see her being abducted by a white-caped individual. Leyla pursues White Cape on top of the train and fights her for Klara. Their battle is cut short by three individuals: Lancelot of the London Combat Revue, Elise of the Berlin Combat Revue and Seijuro Kamiyama of the Imperial Combat Revue (all of them were assigned to investagate the mysterious disappearance of the Moscow Combat Revue). As Lancelot and Elise suggest they release Klara to avoid battling, White Cape puts an unconscious Klara on the ground before leaving the scene. However, Leyla fights back against both girls still determined to get her sister. Cornered by her opponents, Leyla is asked by Lancelot to come with them as she might have more information for them. Leyla, knowing she has no chance to win this battle, silently falls from the train before flying away in the dark night.
Episode 3 : Tokyo Trembles! The New Moscow Combat Revue![]
Leyla arrives in Tokyo, Japan alongside Valery Kaminski and the Moscow Combat Revue. She and the other members of the group jump down in the Imperial Theater's backyard where they meet the Flower Division. An angry Hatsuho confronts the Revue for their unexpected arrival before Valery Kaminski lands and introduces himself. Leyla and her Revue follow their Captain in the Dining Hall for a meeting with Kaoru Rindou and the Flower Division. Kaminski tells the Flower Division that he and his Revue were about to welcome a new member in the outskirts of Petrograd until their airship was attacked by an unknown adversary. He mentions that while the entire Revue survived the attack, they will forever be scarred by horrible burn injuries, forcing them to wear long black coats and metal helmets. He states they have come to retrieve their last member : Klara.
Leyla, steps forward and takes off her coat and mask, revealing herself as a beautiful silver-haired young woman. The woman approaches Klara and tells her to come along with her but Klara does not seem to remember her, much to Leyla's shock. Kaoru tells Kaminski that Klara doesn't remember anything from her past but Kaminski says that it does not matter and that his Revue will personaly take care of Klara's recovery. Klara is again approached by Leyla who keeps telling her to come back but the young girl is terrified. Leyla is stopped by Hatsuho who angrily tells her to back off. The other members of the Flower Division agree with Hatsuho that they will never give a terrified child to strangers but Leyla responds by saying they will take Klara by force if necessary. Hatsuho provokes Leyla but the other girl's right eye glows red granting her unknown strength to tighten Hatsuho's fist. Klara can only watch in fear until Kaminski tells Leyla to stop as Revues are made to fight demons and not others. Kaminski insists the Flower Division to give Klara back but Sakura tells him that they were ordered by their Captain, Seijuro Kamiyama, to watch over Klara and they will keep her until further notice.
When Hatsuho's Kobu is about to get crushed by the demon, Leyla and the Moscow Combat Revue arrive in their respective Strikers, the Ekaterinas, to confront the demon. Leyla mocks the Flower Division's lack of power and effortlessly destroys the demon with the help of her comrades humiliating the Flower Division in the process. Leyla then picks up a piece of shattered blue crystal from the spot the demon fell with Sakura being intrigued by the object.
After the battle ended, Leyla and Kaminski approach the Flower Division who are on the bridge watching Hatsuho's Kobu gets carried away by Reiji. Kaminski taunts the Flower Division by noting that the mighty have fallen. Unamused, Sumire asks the young man what he wants to say. Kaminski looks at Klara and warns Sumire that demons will keep appearing in Tokyo as long as Klara remains in the city. He says that his Revue will not be there to help the Flower Division the next time demons appear. Both he and Leyla leave the scene, leaving Klara and the others watch Hatsuho scream to the heavens in frustration for her actions.
Episode 6 : Strange and Bizarre! The True Identity of Black Cape![]

As they're dancing, Leyla tells Kaminski that Klara has exited the Imperial Theater alongside Sakura and a person they never saw before. The mention of the latter attracts Kaminski's attention.
Leyla stands by Kaminski as he sends Black Cape to capture Klara when she goes to an orphanage alongside her friends.
After witnessing Black Cape's destruction, Klara remembered the destruction of the Moscow Combat Revue which causes her to scream in horror. After watching her sister on the screen, Leyla who was visibly troubled by Klara's pain, is embraced from behind. The young man asks Leyla if she still sides with him after seeing her sister in pain. Leyla replies that she remains loyal to Kaminski in body and soul. Kaminski says that hearing that makes him happy.
Episode 7 : Stealth Mission! Tail the Date![]
Aboard the Sevastopol, Leyla approaches Kaminski who is looking at pictures of Seijuro was has recently returned to Tokyo from his mission in Europe. She tells him they have received an encrypted message from their spy at the WLOF. He says that the time for waiting is finally over as he tells the young woman to prepare for the next phase of their plan.
The next day, Kaminski watches as Seijuro, Sakura and Klara are exiting the Imperial Theater early in the morning. Kaminski suggests that he and Leyla disguise themselves to follow Seijuro, Sakura and Klara as they go on a date together.
As they're walking down the street, Leyla and Kaminski are accidently bumped into by Sakura, Klara and Seijuro who were holding hands as they were trying to escape their unknown followers. Not recognizing the pair, Sakura apologizes to the two as they keep running. Leyla asks her Captain if they have been found out with Kaminski replying it cannot be as their disguises are the ''height of perfection''.
As they keep spying, Leyla and Kaminski see Sakura and Klara running near an alleyway and decide to pursue them. While running after them, the two pass by Itsuki Saijou and Hiromi Hongou of the Moon Division who were spying on Seijuro's trio alongside the Flower Division. Itsuki asks her comrade if they have seen those people before.
After Seijuro's trio gets in a ferry, the Flower Division and the Moon Division are too late to get onboard. However, Leyla and Kaminski run and attempt to catch the boat while getting the attention of everyone who still don't recognize them (aside from Klara). The pair jump and try to land on the boat but fall in the water. Both Leyla and Kaminski are then rescued when lifebuoys are thrown at them.
After coming out of the river, Leyla and Kaminski sit down in the street. Leyla asks Kaminski what to do now but Kaminski says that they did enough for now as they missed their opportunity. Seeing that Leyla is trembling, Kaminski asks her if she's feeling cold with the young woman saying it's due to the water. She remarks on how it didn't seem to affect her Captain that much with the young man saying the water is nowhere as cold as the Siberian toundra. The young man lends his arm to his accomplice to warm her up and reassures her that he will always take care of her. With a soft smile, Leyla lays her head on her Captain's shoulders and closes her eyes.
Episode 8 : Nonstop Chaos! The Combat Revue Challenge![]
Leyla is dreaming about her first meeting with Kaminski where the the latter called the embodiment of beauty and power despite her demonic appearance. Waking up from her dream, Leyla sees Kaminski in her room who tells her to get up and dress as today is the day her sister returns.
Leyla joins Kaminski and the Moscow Combat Revue after the young man challenges the Flower Division for Klara's future. After Kaminski indirectly mocks Sumire and the Flower Division for being obliged to accept the challenge, Kaminski leaves the scene while telling Leyla that he leaves everything in her hands.
For the first round, Leyla faces Hatsuho Shinonome in a dance battle. Leyla is slightly impressed by the shrine maiden but tells herself she will let herself die before disappointing Kaminski. Leyla then goes onstage for performance while being watched by everyone including Kaminski. Even though Hatsuho's traditional Shinto dancing is dazzling, Leyla uses her ballerina skills to do the Black Swan dance in a sorrowful performance that grants her victory with 196 points.
Joyful at her victory, Leyla runs to see Kaminski who praises her. The young man immediately tells her to prepare for what lies ahead. The young woman slightly frowns while thinking that her performance didn't impress him as much as she wanted. Even though Leyla is slightly disappointed by Kaminski's response, the young woman decides to go along with his plan.
After Kaminski forfeited the second round to grant a handicap to the Flower Division, Leyla asks her Captain if this is what he wants as such a move would not give the right impression on them. Kaminski tells her that the curtain is about to rise and that the last round will allow them to move forward with his ambitions. As Kaminski laughs, Leyla looks at her Captain with a worried look.
In the last round, which is a mock combat, Leyla and the Moscow Combat Revue battles the Flower Division in a three vs three battle where the group that frees Klara from the top of the tower is declared the victor. After battle, Leyla sends her two teammates after Hatsuho and Azami while she remains at her spot, which puzzles everyone.
After a few minutes, Leyla is told by Kaminski that it's time for the bell to ring. Kaminski uses his abilities to power up Leyla while also causing Klara's left eye to turn red. After a blackout hits the arena, Leyla makes her fallen teammates rise up from the ground while also powering their weapons, which are actually real. After incapaciting Hatsuho and Azami, the Moscow Combat Revue corners Sakura at the top of the tower. Shocked at the idea that the Moscow Combat Revue is using real ammunition against another Revue, Sakura tries to tell Leyla that they should not act like this. The silver-haired girl rejects her words saying that this is the way as Kaminski ''wills'' it.
Leyla turns her back on Sakura and says that she will take Klara. Sakura moves between Leyla and Klara and tries to protect her friend but her Mugen is shot by Leyla. While a panicking Klara tells Sakura to leave her behind, Sakura exits her Kobu and says that she will not leave her as family has to be protected. Leyla mocks Sakura's words by saying Sakura and Klara are not even blood-related but Sakura answers back by saying family is more than just blood. Angered by her words, Leyla exits her Ekaterina to confront the pair. Leyla tells Klara to remember and reveals her black wings much to Sakura and Klara's shock. Leyla kicks Sakura out of the way, causing her to fall to the ground.
With no one on her way, Leyla grabs her sister's wrist and tells her to come home but Klara, horrified by her friend falling, yells and shines in a bright white light that causes a huge explosion on the tower. The explosion's shockwave hits Leyla and sends off her tower.
Episode 9 : Unbelievable! The Truth About Klara![]
After the attack on the Flower Division, Leyla and the Moscow Combat Revue retreated to the Sevastopol as it went underwater to hide from their enemies. Inside the airship, Leyla's doubts about Kaminski have become more concerning as she fears he no longer cares about her. Kaminski approaches Leyla and invites her to dance. While dancing, Kaminski demands Leyla to search for her sister Klara who flew away after awakening her powers. He refers to Klara as his angel and true ambition which will save the world which sparks jealousy and sadness in the young woman. With a sorrowful face, Leyla asks her Captain if she's no longer worthy for him. Seeing that Leyla is starting to doubt him, Kaminski takes a blue crystal-like object out of his pocket and exposes it in front of Leyla. Unable to look away, Leyla is affected by the blue light and crouches down. Kaminski then orders Leyla again to track down his ''angel'' to which she agrees to with an ominous smile.
Alongside the Moscow Combat Revue, Leyla tracks down Klara to an orphanage ran by Hakushuu Murasame. Leyla lands in front of Klara, Hakushuu and Naoya. The young woman walks closer while telling her sister to come with her. Naoya gets between the two girls and tells Leyla to back off. Unimpressed, Leyla uses her arm to send Naoya against a nearby wall. Naoya tries to get up but can only growl back with rage. Watching the young boy's eyes glow red, Leyla calmly reveals that she has always suspected Hakushuu's orphanage of housing demons. She also declares that she knows that not all the present children were demons and that she will have the Moscow Combat Revue harm them should Klara not come with her. Leyla grabs Klara and runs away with the rest of the Moscow Combat Revue.
As Leyla makes her way to the Sevastopol, the Flower Division arrives to fight her and the Moscow Combat Revue. After Hatsuho reveals that they know that Leyla's group are not the real Moscow Combat Revue, Leyla sends her comrades to fight the Flower Division. Leyla keeps running away as her comrades are being taken down one by one by the Flower Division who are joined by White Cape. Now cornered, Leyla turns into her Nadezhda form and flies down on Hatsuho. The shrine maiden tries to attack her in vain which allows Leyla to pin down Hatsuho's Mugen on the ground. An angry Hatsuho calls Leyla a monster but the demon answers back by saying that Klara, the girl they're trying to defend, is also a monster. Leyla turns over to Klara and tries to persuade her that no one will accept her as they will see her as a monster. She says that Kaminski will embrace her with open arms and accept her for what she is. However, White Cape, who reveals herself to be Hakushuu, frees Klara from Leyla's Ekaterina and reject her claims by saying that Klara needs someone who needs her and vice-versa. Hakushuu also tells Leyla that deep within her, she only wants her sister's happiness.
Affected by Hakushuu's words, Leyla turns over to Klara who tells her older sister that she chooses to remain with Sakura and the Flower Division. A desperate Leyla watches as Klara reaches out to grab the hand of Sakura's Mugen. However, Kaminski uses the Sevastopol to launch an energy beam on the Flower Division causing a massive explosion. The attack seriously injures Sakura and makes her lose consciousness. After being thrown away by the explosion, Klara tries to fly to Sakura's assistance by using her powers but fails to manifest her wings. She is told by Leyla that awakening her powers earlier left her out of energy. As Kaminski keeps firing on the Flower Division, a powerless Klara is taken by Leyla before flying away. As they leave the scene, Klara pleads for her sister to let her go as she sees Hakushuu rescue Sakura from her exploding Mugen.
Episode 10 : The Destruction of Tokyo? The Rage of Tunguska![]
After bringing Klara aboard the Sevastopol, Leyla sits next to her sister who is sleeping in a bed. After Klara wakes up, Leyla tells her that the room was designed to look exactly like their old room back home since Kaminski suggested they needed the ''taste of the familiar''. While Leyla tries to tell Klara that everything is exactly like home, her younger sister rejects her words by saying that the place they called home is gone and that they cannot go back home. Klara tries to convince her sister that the path she's following is wrong but Leyla talks back by questioning if Klara's path is indeed alongside the Flower Division. Klara says that Sakura and the other girls care about her even though they know the truth about her. Leyla says that no human could ever love them but Klara mentions that Natalia, who was human, loved them and that Leyla also loved her. Klara says that true love is about trust and asks Leyla is she doesn't feel the same. While hearing her sister's words, a blue light shines in Leyla's chest which causes her some pain. Worried about her sister, Klara approaches Leyla until the light disappears. Kaminski suddenly enters the room and asks Klara to not be so hard on her older sister. The young man says Leyla that she doesn't fell too well and to come see him later for some ''adjustments''. Kaminski turns over to Klara and tells her that she has great power that is not without complications. The young man reminds Klara of the destruction in Petrograd and uses a blue crystal that enters Klara's chest and puts her into a deep sleep. As Kaminski takes Klara into his arms, a sad Leyla watches as Kaminski says that all of the players are at their proper place and that the finale act will begin.
After Kaminski used Klara's power to destroy a mountain in front of the entire world, Leyla approaches her Captain and asks him what should they do about the Flower Division who have just infiltrated the Sevastopol. Kaminski says that the proper answer will be to destroy Tokyo but that they will be no ''fun'' in that. Instead, Kaminski decides to send dozens of mechanical dolls against the Flower Division. As their opponents are fighting, Leyla and Kaminski watch over an unconscious Klara who is still attached to the Rage of Tunguska. As Kaminski describes how beautiful and powerful Klara is, he tells Leyla that she must be lucky to share blood with someone so significant. Upset by her captain's admiration of Klara, Leyla plainly agrees with his words.
Episode 11 : A Fantastic, Tragic Love! Leyla's Heart![]
Leyla and Kaminski confront the Flower Division who has come to rescue Klara. Leyla stands by as Kaminski tells the Flower Division that he considers mankind to be selfish and corrupted and that Klara will correct everything. He also reveals that he was almost killed by a blue crystal that fell from the heavens while transporting an angelic figure (who is revealed to be Hakushuu Murasame). Kaminski absorbed the blue crystal's powers becoming an immortal and obtaining incredible powers. As he traveled the world, Kaminski discovered how mankind was greedy, horrible and destructive. One day, he found Leyla who was in her Nadezhda form near a river and called her beautiful. From there, he infiltrated Natalia Ruzhkova's project and concluded they were the key to save and reform the world. When Sakura and the Flower Division reject Kaminski's comments as that of a delusional madman, Kaminski tries to recruit the Flower Division to his side but is coldly rejected by the girls who are furious by his declarations. As a result, Kaminski threatens to destroy Tokyo but fails to do so as Hakushuu arrives after destroying the Rage of Tunguska. Needing some time to fix the Rage of Tunguska, Kaminski orders Leyla to fight the Flower Division.
A fully transformed Leyla fights Hakushuu and the Flower Division as Kaminski tries to repair the Rage of Tunguska. Sakura tries to persuade Leyla that they don't need to fight. While Hatsuho tries to tell Sakura to not reason with Leyla as she works with Kaminski, Sakura tells Leyla that Natalia raised her and her sister for more than fighting but Leyla rejects her claims by saying that Sakura knows nothing about what her and her sister have been through. Sakura admits that while she only knew Klara for a short period of time, she was able to see her heart and how Natalia intended for her and Klara to bridge the gap between humans and demons. Sakura tries to tell Leyla to save her family but the Nadezhda laughs of Sakura's claims by saying that she's a monster and that she will always be a monster. The young swordswoman answers back by saying Kaminski is the real monster and that he is manipulating her. An angry Leyla flies towards Sakura and attacks her. Leyla calmly admits that she knew all along that Kaminski was using her as even ''a blind man could see it''.
Leyla says she was always ashamed of her true nature as a Nadezhda until her first meeting with Kaminski in Russia. Even though she always knew of Kaminski's sinister intentions, she was happy that someone could call her beautiful. When Kaminski joined Natalia's project, Leyla was happy to be at his side and always tried to please Kaminski in every way she could until it was revealed her sister Klara had more potential than her. She reveals that ever since Klara escaped with Natalia, Kaminski always searched for Klara and pursued her all the way to Tokyo which fueled jealousy in Leyla's heart. She says how she did everything for Klara but that she ''stole'' Kaminski's heart even though she never wanted it.
Leyla's declarations causes Sakura and her friends to show sympathy for Leyla. Kaminski, who heard Leyla's words, tells the young woman that he wishes she had told him before and that he will make up to it. The young man bows and apologizes. A touched Leyla turns over to Kaminski only to see him use a blue crystal in an attempt to brainwash her again. As Leyla groans in pain, Kaminski says that Leyla could rest easy knowing that he will ''cherish'' Klara in the same way he cherished her before telling her to die. As Leyla stands motionless, Sakura and Kaminski see the young woman declare that she will stop him. A shocked Kaminski asks how Leyla is able to move freely with the young woman saying that she overcame her brainwashing as her love for Klara is stronger than her loyalty towards Kaminski. Leyla says that she thought serving Kaminski will be enough but that she was wrong. An angry Kaminski says that he was wrong in thinking a creature like her could ever be an angel. Declaring that he no longer needs Leyla, Kaminski causes a wind blast that sends Leyla against the wall only for her to fall.
With his cannon repaired, Kaminski orders Klara to fire the Rage of Tunguska again as Hakushuu and the Flower Division moves in to stop him only to defend against blue energy shots. An injured Leyla stands up and flies towards Klara to rescue her. Kaminski says how much Leyla has disappointed her and fires an energy shot at her only to be blocked by Hakushuu. When Leyla asks the vigilante why did she protect her, Hakushuu says a sister's love is more than enough to prove that Leyla is a good person. Leyla approaches Klara and calls out to her but is mortally wounded by Kaminski much to everyone's shock. Mortally injured, Leyla breaks all of the cannon cables and saves Klara as Kaminski desperately yells at her to stop. An explosion sends Leyla and an unconscious Klara on the ground.
Leyla apologizes to Klara and takes out the blue crystal planted in her chest by Kaminski. As Leyla cries for her sister, a tear falls on Klara's cheek which makes the young girl wake up and say her sister's name. Klara asks why Leyla was crying but Leyla tells her to stand up. Leyla tells Klara to leave and go back to her new family as a massive fire appears and seemingly kills her. Sakura, Hakushuu and the Flower Division can only look down in sadness and frustration that they have failed to save Leyla. Shocked at the sight of Leyla's supposed death and angered by Kaminski mocking her sister, Klara suffers an emotional breakdown and her powers begin to go out of control in front of her friends. Everyone could only stand still as a white light in the shape of angel wings engulfs the Sevastopol.
Episode 12 : The Grand Finale! Hope for Tomorrow![]
During his battle with the Combat Revues, a fully transformed Kaminski fights against Sakura and Klara in their spiricle strikers. After catching the girls, Kaminski electrifies the girls in an attempt to kill them but suddenly, Leyla, who was engulfed earlier by fire, manifests herself as a spirit to embrace Kaminski from behind his back. A shocked Kaminski begs her to go away but Leyla tells him she loves her and drains his powers and immortality away. This allows Sakura and Klara to get closer and expose Kaminski with a strong attack with Sakura stabbing him afterwards in the chest, killing him.
With Kaminski dead and his campaign over, Leyla is believed to be dead by everyone else including her sister Klara who becomes an official member of the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division. In reality, Leyla survived as her shadow is seen roaming near the Sevastopol's ruins. The young woman finds a blue crystal similar to the ones Kaminski used to brainwash her. Leyla sees the crystal open a portal to Shadow Tokyo leaving her future unknown.
