Maria Tachibana (タチバナ・マリア, Tachibana Maria) is the current captain of the first generation Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division.

Appearance[]

Maria has green eyes, one of which is obscured by her blonde hair which is cut in a bob cut.

In Sakura Wars (1996), Maria wears a dark purple two-piece trench coat that covers much of her body. She wears red gloves and brown and red boots.

Starting in Sakura Wars 2, Maria begins to wears a chalk-striped double-breasted suit with matching trousers. She wears a white turtleneck long sleeves underneath and a pair of black and white boots.

Personality[]

Maria is the voice of responsibility and discipline in the often chaotic Flower Division. Whether being in the middle to break up an argument between Sumire Kanzaki and Kanna Kirishima or trying to ensure the safety of the overly enthusiastic Iris Chateaubriand and Kohran Li, everyone can count on Maria keeping a cool head and ensuring the Flower Division's safety.

This devotion to ensuring the safety of the Flower Division extends to the battlefield. Maria's tactical ability is second to none. She is often the first to give recommendations to captain and later commander Ichiro Ogami for the best way to navigate any battle while also having the combat experience to back that tactical know-how up peerless accuracy with her signature revolver.

Maria's leadership focused mentality is often her biggest weakness, however. Often jumping into facing her troubles alone, Maria forgets to depend on the family she's made, likely due to her many years alone. But, like true family, Flower Division members like Ogami and Sakura Shinguji are always there to help her and remind her they will face every obstacle together.

Etymology[]

  • The name Maria is a female (but occasionally male) given name in many diverse cultures, including African, Arab, Armenian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, English, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Romanian, Pakistani, Serbian, Swedish, and Spanish. It became popular with the spread of Christianity as a Latinized form of the Hebrew name of Jesus' mother Mary (Miriam in Hebrew). The meaning of the name is uncertain, but it may originally be an Egyptian name, probably derived from "mry" (beloved) or "mr" (love) ("eminent lady" or "beloved lady"), although it was used in Europe even before the establishment of Christianity as a female form of the Roman name Marius.
    • In the Russian language, Masha (Маша) is a diminutive of Maria. The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from my "beloved" or "love". It has been used as a nickname or as a pet name for women named Maria or Marie.
  • Maria's surname 'Tachibana' (立花?)  : 'Tachi' (?) means stand(ing), 'bana' ( hana?) means flower.
    • 'Tachibana ' (?) means tangerine and citrus tachibana, Maria's floral namesake, refers to a species of wild green inedible citrus fruits native to Japan.

Trivia[]

  • Maria is the tallest female characters and the second tallest character in the series, the first being Kanna.
  • It is revealed that in Sakura's story mode in Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2, Maria has a fear of cockroaches.
  • Maria is known to speak at least three languages: Russian, English, and Japanese. Of these, she speaks at least Russian and Japanese fluently.
  • Maria is voiced by Urara Takano, who also has a strong fluent english (As it can be saw during Ouka Kenran ova)
  • One of Maria's image songs, "Akai Katyusha", appears to draw heavy influence from Russian folk songs.
