Michael Sunnyside (マイケル・サニーサイド, Maikeru sanīsaido) is the owner of the Little Lip Theater and general commander of the New York Combat Revue.
Appearance[]
Sunnyside is a man with brown bowl-sized hair and grey eyes. He's depicted as wearing glasses as well as a white business suit with a purple tie and a lavender shirt underneath.
Personality[]
Sunnyside appears as a rich tycoon who lives in a gorgeous mansion in Central Park and goes by the motto "Life is Entertainment!". He's usually seen as a happy man who takes everything lightly much to the annoyance of Cheiron. He takes interest in Japanese culture such as sweets and bonsais and thereby respects Shinjiro who he calls by many names such as ''Shinsky'' and ''Shinmillion'''. He really cares for the people of New York and his workers especially his niece Diana Caprice.
As a business man and Commander of the New York Combat Revue, Sunnyside takes into account that the New York Combat Revue's priority is to protect the people of New York even in the most difficult situations. However, while he has a serious side, he can also use cold logic to protect the city even when it requires cruel and unwanted actions. This is shown when he suggested sending Gemini to psychotherapy to erase Geminine's existence or sacrifice a member of the Five-Rings Warriors to seal away Nobunaga. While he is not a cruel man, his choice of words and logic have shown to create distrust and disgust by the Star Division.
Sunnyside has shown to have a very close relationship with his Vice-Commander Ratchet. While the two have no romantic feelings towards each other, they have a friendly bond that allows them to commande the Star Division. It is shown that Sunnyside's use of cold logic makes Ratchet question how far the Commander will go to create results. While she doesn't like the idea of manipulating people, she stands by Sunnyside and understands that everything he does is for the sake of New York.
Background[]
History[]
Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love[]
In 1928, the New York Combat Revue has made a deal to have Ichiro Ogami, the Commander of the Imperial Combat Revue, to come to New York and assist the New York Combat Revue. Sunnyside sends Ratchet Altair to the port to welcome him, not knowing that Ogami didn't come and instead sent his nephew Shinjiro Taiga.
Chapter 1 : A Samurai Makes His First Stand[]
Sunnyside first appears when Ratchet brings Shinjiro Taiga to the Littlelip Theater, which serves as the base of the New York Combat Revue, to meet up with him. Sunnyside greets the young man by speaking Japanese in a lighthearted tone. While Shinjiro finds the man weird due to his lighthearted attitude, he confirms his intentions to dedicate his life to the New York Combat Revue. Afterwards, Sunnyside asks Shinjiro if he's familiar with harakiri and that he should not consider commiting harakiri as he should live with his mistakes in America. After that, he gives the young man the address of the apartment that he will live in.
Later on, Sunnyside is confronted at his office by Cheiron, with Shinjiro in tow, where she angrily confronts a nonchalant Sunnyside about disrespecting the law and putting a 13-year-old boy to work. While Sunnyside tries to defend himself by claiming to not be as stupid as Cheiron thinks, Shinjiro tells the lawyer that he's 19 years old which makes the woman laugh as she thinks Sunnyside is making the boy lie as he wants. Sunnyside says that while Shinjiro may look younger than what he is, he is their new employee who was sent from Japan as their ''very best''. Cheiron is angered by the fact that Japan has decided to send some ''half-grown greenhorn'' instead of Commander Ogami who she thought was supposed to come (a claim that shocks Shinjiro). Upset, Cheiron leaves the scene after telling Sunnyside to sent back Shinjiro to Japan and bring the ''real'' Commander. Sunnyside mocks Cheiron's grumpy attitude by saying her boiling point is absolute zero before being asked by a confused Shinjiro about Cheiron's claims that his uncle was supposed to come instead of him. The Commander admits that they requested Japan's best man for the job and Shinjiro's coming to America instead of his famous uncle is pretty much a disappointment to everyone, a declaration that Shinjiro sees as brutal.
