Media Portrayal

Mifune (三船) is a minor character mentioned in Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love. He was the former swordmaster of Gemini Sunrise and her twin sister Geminine (who exists as a split personality). While confronting the demon Ranmaru, Mifune sacrificed himself in a desperate attempt to kill the demon and save his student. His death served as the catalyst for most of the Sunrise sisters' actions in the events of Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love.

Appearance[]

Mifune was an elderly man with his hair in a ponytail and a small goatee.

Personality[]

Mifune was a man of kind and noble nature who loved and treated the Sunrise sisters as his own daughters. His main concern was to make sure that the sisters will have a bright future before them as he told them to go to New York if something ever happened to them.

Mifune was a noble samurai who believed in using a sword for good and not for evil. His main motto, ''Punish the offense, pity the offender'', consisted in forgiving an enemy no matter who they are. He was also brave as he showed no fear before a demon and willingly sacrificed himself to take the demon down with him.

It is also suggested that Mifune may have been slightly perverted as Gemini mentioned most of her training consisted in the girl preventing him from groping her breasts and butt and being told to massage her chest when she's nervous.

Background[]

Not much is known about Mifune's past before meeting Gemini. He met the young girl at some point and trained her to become a samurai. Gemini's sister Geminine, who secretly lives within Gemini as a split personality, will suddenly emerge and dominate the body during training but nobody other than Mifune knew about her existence. Mifune will then train both girls with Gemini not knowing her sister's existence.

In 1926, the Japanese demon Ranmaru appears in Texas in search of the Book of Five Rings that holds information about the Five-Rings Warriors. Against Gemini's pleas, Mifune sacrifices himself to prevent Ranmaru from getting the Book. With only one half of the Book, Gemini cries over the loss of her master. Following Mifune's wishes to go to New York City should something ever happen to him, Gemini and her horse Larry leave Texas for the Big Apple.

At some point before his death, Mifune sent a letter to Michael Sunnyside which told Sunnyside about Geminine's existence and how Gemini had a great amount of Pneuma in her body.

History[]

Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love[]

In 1928, Mifune's death still looms over the Sunrise sisters as they are now living in New York City. The challenges of trying to adapt herself to the city lifestyle, along with Mifune's death, makes Gemini fall into a depression, forcing Geminine to resurface. Geminine starts then fighting crime as the Masked Woman, a vigilante who rides a horse and fights with a katana. Gemini, who originally came to the Big Apple to get revenge for her master's death, ends up discovering about Geminine's actions and wants to drop out. She tries to convince her sister to give up on avenging Mifune but in vain.

Chapter 6 : Gemini the Twin[]

Mifune appears in a vision that Geminine receives while fighting Shinjiro Taiga on the Brooklyn Bridge. While Geminine is upset that she cannot move on from Mifune's death unless she avenges him, Mifune tells her that she cannot master the sword with impure thoughts. After encouraging Geminine to be a better person alongisde her sister, Geminine finally drops her desire for revenge allowing Gemini to re-emerge.

Etymology[]

  • The surname Mifune means "three" (三) (mi) and "boat, ship, vessel" (船) (fune).
